To enhance biodiversity in agricultural landscapes of Saxony-Anhalt, farmer can apply for subsidies within the Agri-Environmental Scheme (AES) 'Perennial Wildflower Strips and Areas'. For establishment, the use of regional wild plants from certified seed propagation is obligatory. Farmers can select between five site-specific mixtures (loess/loam dry, loess/loam fresh, sand dry, sand fresh, moist sites), containing between 27 and 30 forbs (no grasses).
Within the project, we evaluated the vegetation development and establishment success of sown forbs on perennial wildflower strips and areas, that were implemented by farmers within AES. In addition, we continued the monitoring on a block trial at the Campus Strenzfeld: perennial wildflower strip trial, established in 2010/2011.
For knowledge transfer, we compiled best practice guidelines, technical advice and training for stakeholders and institutions involved in AES.
